Language Arts Block Overview
Writers' Workshop |
|
There are three blocks built into our 3rd grade schedule for Language Arts, which includes Writing Workshop, Guided Reading, and Spelling class. In our classroom, we hold Writing Workshop first. Each day, there is a mini writing or grammar lesson, then students are given the opportunity to write, write, write! After they write about a page or more, students pair and share with their writing partners. On some days, select students will present their writing to the entire class, as well.
Guided Reading Groups
During the Guided Reading/Spelling blocks, students will meet with either Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Sutton, or myself for reading group time. While reading groups are meeting, the students are also rotating through a spelling-related center and another one utilizing technology on our new tablets. Guided reading groups are leveled by ability to read fluently and with strong comprehension. Other topics such as noting character traits, sequencing text, making inferences, and predicting what is to come will also be practiced while in our reading groups.
Spelling Centers
New Spelling lists will be sent home on Fridays each week. Your child must complete one of two or three homework assignment choices each week, and the homework assignment is due on or before Wednesday. Weekly Spelling tests will be held on Thursday each week. If there is a shortened school week, Spelling unit work might be skipped.
